Here are those same labeled bags in the lab. See all the bowls? All the artifacts in the bags will be washed and cleaned in them.

The cleaned artifacts and bones are then examined by experts to identify them. Things like bones are examined and the kind of animal they came from is identified. This tells us what the ancient people who lived on the site might have been eating. The stone tools tell us about their activities.

All the artifacts are laid out in boxes to examine them.

These look like bones to me. See the labeled bag from the field?

A small dig can produce lots of boxes of artifacts.
